the sacrament
of marriage
The Episcopal Church upholds the sanctity of marriage but
recognizes that as human beings we fall short of God's ideal for us.
We want to do everything we can to support the two persons whom have been
united in holy matrimony. We offer pastoral counseling and, when
appropriate, referrals to professional counselors. We believe that
being part of a living community of faith, with its regular worship,
formation, and outreach, is helpful to the strengthening of marriages.
Yet when we do fail, we believe God's grace continues to be with us, to lift
us up again.
If you are divorced and are considering remarriage in the
church, we ask that you speak to the priest. While remarriage may be
permitted, regular premarital instruction and the bishop's approval are
required. This is to ensure that the responsibilities from previous
relationships (children, financial support, etc.) are fulfilled and that the
new relationship is supported by prayer and godly counsel.
The following is a homily preached by a priest in England
that is reflective of the pastoral leadership of Saint Stephen's Church.
We are grateful for Father Simon's permission to reprint it here.
