Sacrament of
Confirmation
Grant,
Almighty God, that we, who have been redeemed from the old life of sin
by our baptism into the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ,
may be renewed in your Holy Spirit, and live in righteousness and true
holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Confirmation is a mature commitment to one
baptismal covenant, with the laying on of a hands and anointing with oil
by a bishop for the empowerment of ministry by the grace of the Holy
Spirit.
If one has already been confirmed in a
tradition that has apostolic succession (Roman Catholic and Eastern
Orthodox), then one is received into the communion of the
Episcopal Church.
Preparation courses, sometimes called
"inquirers' classes," are offered from time to time by the Rector in
conjunction with other teachers. We offer separate courses for
adults and for those who are in junior or senior high.
Additionally, special courses may be set up to accommodate special
circumstances.
Confirmation Newsletter
Concerning the Service
In
the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an
early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly
prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and
commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to
receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.
Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of
hands by a bishop, are also expected to make a public
affirmation of their faith and commitment to the
responsibilities of their Baptism in the presence of a bishop
and to receive the laying on of hands.
When there is no Baptism, the rites of Confirmation, Reception,
and the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows are administered in the
following form.
The
Nicene Creed is not used at this service.
It
is appropriate that the oblations of bread and wine be presented
by persons newly confirmed.
